The world of SUVs is quickly turning into the world of over-sized station wagons with all-wheel-drive. Gone are the ladder frames and live axles, replaced by unibodies with half-shafts seemingly no thicker than a straw. Advantages of unibody design include reduction in weight and fuel consumption, along with more car-like driving characteristics.

Auto Show Season is underway and while Boston is not on the major auto show circuit such as New York or Los Angeles, it was still fun to attend. To follow up our recent 2011: Return of the Wagon, I intended to go deep into the world of mini wagons, or 5-door hatchbacks as most manufacturers call them. However, instead of listing everything with five doors, I decided to go into the more interesting vehicles first, followed by the less enthusiast-orientated models.
Different but the same would be the way to describe the feeling I got after driving the Subaru Outback for about forty seconds. It is different because the fake wood trim is of different veneer, some buttons are in different places and the windows are a little bigger. Otherwise, everything is almost the same as the Honda Crosstour and Toyota Venza I drove recently. I came upon this beauty at a New England antique flea market (I call it crap, more on that later) which my wife likes to attend. This fairy late model Tacoma belonged to a rather nice but particular man who was selling vintage toys and old paintings.
Apparently the man is an artist too, a painter if you will, and an opinionated one at that. What you see is actual latex paint (among a variety of others), the kind one would use on walls. For most people, myself included, purchasing a minivan equates to throwing in a towel into your game of life. The minivan has taken up the stigma of station wagons from decades past and it may be the vehicle most responsible for influencing the SUV trend, which gives young parents hopes of freedom they have once known.
For 2010 Toyota strives to change this unfavorable image with the all-new Sienna. Toyota wants the Venza to be something smaller than a RAV4 but not quite a station wagon, as station wagons are disliked in the United States.
