Another week, another Larz Anderson Museum of Transportation Lawn Event. This week’s theme was British Cars, or British-y if you include the new Mini Cooper and the few models with American iron under their bonnets. Below is a gallery of the dreadful beautiful British machinery, which filled the brisk Brookline air with the scent of burned oil leather.

While wondering aimlessly around the New Hampshire Motor Speedway during the recent 24 Hours of LeMons race, I noticed that there were other interesting cars besides the crappy racers. The parking areas of the infield were filled with with cars, trucks, and other vehicles which would make enthusiast drool when spotted by their lonesome and not over-shadowed by the race. Check them out, there is something for everyone.

Remote Start and Manual Transmission [with VIDEO]

5152 500x800 image Remote Start and Manual Transmission [with VIDEO]

This was a very nice Mazda RX-7. The rotary engine was replaced by a the amazing LS6 from the Corvette Z06 and the 6-speed transmission to go along with it. With wide fenders and what looks like a nice overall shape, it all probably added up to tens of thousandths of dollars in work. Also installed was a remote start which seemed to have malfunctioned, sending the car off into the water, but not before it hit two motorcycles and another car.

Auto Show Season is underway and while Boston is not on the major auto show circuit such as New York or Los Angeles, it was still fun to attend. There were no major unvailings, no scantily-dressed models, and no concept cars. There was however a ton of cars that anyone can buy, some upcoming models, and a some interesting people. I did not have a chance to see everything at the show, but here are some highlights of what I did get to see. … Continue Reading

SPIED! Mercedes Benz SLomething

3837 300x350 spyshot 0 SPIED! Mercedes Benz SLomething

I get an email from my friend Kelly this morning about how he saw a camouflaged car on his way to work (LA area). He sent this over, a picture of what appears to be the next SL or SLK. Probably SL, judging by the size.

Ok, now what?

I never understood the fascination with automotive “spy” photography. Here is a car, all decked out in all kinds of crap, showing nothing more than a silhouette, which in this case hasn’t changes much in twenty years, and that is pretty much it. Now, is any sane person not going to go buy the excellent 2010 SL63 because they saw this and said “wow, I love it, I’ll keep my ’89 SL another year just so that I can get this!”? I doubt it.

And auto manufacturers, if you don’t want your new models seen in public, why do you insist on driving them in public? Why not load up your super secret vehicle into an enclosed trailer and bring to the testing facility? I’m going to have to raise the good old BS flag here – you want those test mules to be seen.

Local Hero Goes For Rally Gold

July 12, 2010 Stories 3 Comments

3161 340x350 bacon rally motorsports 6 Local Hero Goes For Rally Gold What do you want to be when you grow up?  The question all men are asked early in their childhoods. The answer is never a cubicle-bound paper-pusher.  At an early age all boys aspire to be someone great, someone heroic, someone inspirational such as a firefighter or a race-car driver. Sadly, most of us end up spending our days replying to email chains or sitting in meetings discussing the next fiscal budget.

Meet Bill Bacon, rally race-car driver for Bacon Motorsport Team and a professional firefighter from Chemsford, Massachusetts. In case his resume does not sound impressive enough add president, and the only employee, of a small garage door installation company. Just for good measure throw in race-car builder, fabricator, mechanic and the guy who sweeps the floor at the end of the day.

This year in place of their typical Volvo they are running (a piece of) American iron – a beautiful Chevy Celebrity! By the look of the grill it appears to be a rare early 1983-ish model. You may remember Sean’s (team captain) story of the 2009 rally and the sad end to an amazingly cool Volvo, remnants of which were spotted in Edgewater, NJ. … Continue Reading

2959 370x900 are you 18 yet bmw Caption This Are You 18 Yet?

Yes, the license plate on this BMW says RU18YET. The fact that it is a BMW and the plates are from New Jersey (the southern part near the shore, FYI, not the awesome northern part where cool people live) is icing on the cake. I had a few ideas on what I want to say here… but I decided to have some reader participation.Looking for some captions or opinions. Go!

The New General Motors

1432 660x520 cover custom The New General Motors I have mentioned in my Cadillac SRX and CTS Sport Wagon quick reviews that American automotive companies absolutely need to step up their game as soon as possible in order to survive. Not only do they need to have products that are comparable to the rest of the world, they also need to find a new way of marketing. On August 10th 2009, the new-post-bankruptcy General Motors did just that.
