One of the greatest Concours events on the east coast, the Greenwich Concours d ‘ Elegance, is split into two days: a domestic day on Saturday and European day on Sunday. I only made it to the show on Sunday since it is some distance from my home and because I find the obscure European cars more interesting. Check out the gallery below where I have attempted to capture the most interesting cars.

One Lap of America 2011 – The Dramatic Start of RedFive

5127 640x500 cgd redfive One Lap of America 2011 – The Dramatic Start of RedFive

Before getting the turbocharged E34 535i to the start of One Lap in Indiana, Justin Kababik and Baer Connard wanted to make sure that everything was working properly and the car was race-ready. Needless to say, things were not perfect. Here is a day-by-day rundown of the week prior to the start of the race.

Monday, April 18th

Shake down test at Lime Rock Park. Not since 2001 has RedFive made it back from the track under its own power, so these were trying times. RedFive performed very well however. Sure, there were minor issues such as vacuum hoses popping off, or brakes which didn’t work too good, or the occasional disappearance of coolant (more on both of these later). The great news was that handling was sharp and neutral, and despite not getting all 17psi of boost every time the throttle was applied, the acceleration was great. … Continue Reading

Having a project car means having a to-do list. Having a project car which is also a racecar means having a to-do list with a deadline. If your project is not completed well in advance of the race, you’re not racing, it’s that simple. Redfive Turbo E34 is no exception and with the start of One Lap of America at the end of the month, that deadline and that to-do list are butting heads.

Getting Ready for One Lap of America

March 2, 2011 Motorsport 6 Comments
4699 320x500 535cover Getting Ready for One Lap of America

One Lap of America is an eight-day driving endurance race created by Brock Yates. Reading this you probably already know that it started as free-for-all run from New York City to Redondo Beach, California in the 1970’s and inspired a handful of movies. You also probably know that these days it is a more disciplined event where racing takes place on tracks and public roads are used only as means of getting form one location to the next.

Much like me, at one point you probably also wanted to enter One Lap of America. You are still confident that your mad driving skillz and even madder car tuning, modification, and repair skillz would totally pwn all those suckas and their jalopies. Right.

Talk is cheap for Justin Kababik, who in 2000 entered his first One Lap with a stock-ish ’89 BMW 535i. He loved the event so much that he entered again One Lap again in 2001 and 2002, each time modifying his 535i accordingly for faster lap times. Sadly the M30 motor did not like the pressurized air much and blew up on the first lap of the first event in 2002. D’oh!

BMW gets stuck on ice, pulls a Ferrari

4424 320x240 e39onfiredumbass BMW gets stuck on ice, pulls a Ferrari As the Southeast struggles to move around in this latest round of winter weather, perhaps nobody is struggling as much as this guy is. This man was driving his ’99 BMW 5-Series through Marietta, GA he came up to a bit of an incline where he began to lose traction on ice. At that time he did what every idiot would do and decided to just floor it, hoping that he could magically fight off the laws of physics, or perhaps melt the ice with his spinning tire? I don’t know. … Continue Reading

2011: Return of The Wagon

October 22, 2010 Quick Looks 10 Comments

ReturnoftheWagon2 650x350 2011: Return of The Wagon

Perhaps it is the name itself that conjures up thoughts of big, bulky hunks of metal forcing us on boring road trips to Grandma’s for the weekend. In United States, the term “station wagon” comes from its initial use as the taxi from train stations in the early 1900s. Before the term station wagon was adopted, they were called “depot hacks.” Good change huh?

When Ford introduced their Model A in 1929, the station wagon was officially born. Other manufacturers quickly followed in Ford’s footsteps. For decades wagons were loved throughout the world and every manufacturer had at least a few in their model lineup.

Compared to those from the mid 20th century, wagons, like most cars, have lost quite a bit of flair becoming longer versions of boring sedans. The 1970s through the early 1990s were especially rough for the wagon’s image. Those years shaped Baby-Boom and Gen-X buyers to despise the station wagon, which is reflected in sales numbers. For whatever reason, the image of the station wagon is tainted with thoughts of the uncool. But could 2011 be the year that marks the return of the wagon? … Continue Reading
