Driving Jaguar’s new XFR, on the Road and on the Track

You know what’s wrong with car reviews? The cars being reviewed are brand spankin’ new. Three weeks ago, when an agent at the rental agency informed that I will be getting a Suzuki SX, one of the least expensive cars on the market, I felt a bit disappointed. Keeping an open mind, I started driving while looking for this car’s faults; where did they cut corners? What was not included? What was about to fall off? Will it roll on the first curve? Will it make it up a hill? To my disappointment and bewilderment, I found none. What I had here was a perfectly good $15,000 car.

Modern Classic: 1993 Ford Mustang Cobra

4838 350x290 93 mustang cobra 9 Modern Classic: 1993 Ford Mustang Cobra

In the automotive world Cobra has two meanings, the Shelby Cobra and the Ford Mustang Cobra. Carroll Shelby took a British sports car called the AC Cobra and stuck an American V8 into it in turn creating an icon. The other is the Ford Mustang Cobra which came to life on the Mustang II in 1976 as an appearance package that was available for all engine choices. Two years later, Ford offered a King Cobra package with the 302 V8 as its only engine option for the final year of Mustang II.

In 1991 Ford established the Special Vehicles Team. The group was charged with building high performance vehicles for enthusiasts. Their first products were shown at 1992 Chicago Auto Show, with the introduction the F-150 Lightning pickup and the Mustang Cobra. … Continue Reading

Quick Drive: 2012 Acura TL

4822 650x400 2012 acura tl cover Quick Drive: 2012 Acura TL

In 2004 a uniquely sculptured third generation Acura TL premiered. Contemporary looks combined with legendary reliability and a fair price made it an instant hit. Even my own mother bought one. When parked next to my E46 BMW, the bimmer looked downright dated and, to add insult to injury was significantly down on power. At the time I said that this TL would have been a nearly perfect automobile had it been rear-wheel-drive.

In 2009 the fourth generation of the TL came out. Acura took a big chance stylistically with it, being the first car in its lineup to feature the infamous “Power Plenum” front end, which became known as the “beak”. The whole car seemed bigger and more massive. Despite the new all-wheel-drive system, increased room and power, the automotive media chastised the TL for its looks. Buyers showed equally little mercy as sales numbers were significantly down from those of the previous car. … Continue Reading

First offered as a package on the Impala in 1961, some consider the Impala SS to be one of the first muscle cars. Its name alone conjures up images of muscle cars, drag strips, and the golden age of General Motors. In 1969 GM decided it was unnecessary to continue with a performance version of big sedan and the SS was retired just as the world was entering an energy crisis. … Continue Reading

For someone who loves cars, driving along Santa Monica Boulevard in Hollywood or Beverly Hills can be an amazing experience. At first your head is snapping left and right to get a better view of the latest exotic you just cough in your peripheral vision, Lord knows we can spot them better than any change a woman can do to her hair. Saturation comes with time however and dime-a-dozen Aston Martins no longer impress, and frankly neither does anything with less than sixteen cylinders. That is how I felt by end of day two of my trip, until I saw the brightly lit Heritage Classics dealership and nearly plowed my Suzuki rental into the G550 in front of me. … Continue Reading

French car manufacturers have a history of making unique cars, and the 1980s may have been the pinnacle of their independent engineering and design. Before going more mainstream in the mid-1990s (at least from an engineering perspective), French car companies used the latest (and therefore not always the greatest) technology to make their vehicles stand apart. The resultant vehicles, which can be described as either as quirky or insane, have developed a love-it-or-hate-it following from the public.

El Diablo – The Most Powerful M5

Before a new model of a car is available for sale, chances are that an internet forum for the said model already exists. Potential future owners discuss options, colors, features, rumors and their plans for the car. Once the cars are available for sale, prices are discussed, followed by questions regarding which engine mods make the most power and which rims look best.

Then there is that one guy, the guy who has been on the forum from the get go, the guy with 20 posts per day. He is that guy, the guy who goes all out and builds a car of epic proportions. No expense is spared on his car, it gets only the best of stuff and is taken to only the best of tuners. The car becomes an instant legend, gains a cult following, and in the process shuts up all the haters. That car was El Diablo, and it was the most powerful M5 ever made.

Another month, another auto show. This time we are NOT in Geneva, one of the most famous auto show locations in the world. Why did we not go? Well, it was simply too cold and we couldn’t bother to pull ourselves away from the comfort of CGD Headquarters. Check out the good stuff that was shown in Geneva: supercars you’ll never drive, one car you’ll want REALLY badly, and two models to appease your tree-hugging friends… no horse poop, no corporate sponsored articles, just facts, opinion and some fun while we’re at it.

Next month we’ll be at the New York International Auto Show!!! …and we’ll be doing it LIVE!!!!

This video by Format67 is a return to the “running from the cops” days for most of us, when we would find an empty parking lot, have our fun and quickly dart away before getting in trouble.”
