Best Automotive Commercial Ever?

April 25, 2011 Opinion 7 Comments

Before discovering the Auto Show, I was this little boy. I was going around to dealerships and checking out all the cars that would buy if I was an adult at that time. I collected piles and piles of brochures all which I studied cover-to-cover, over and over again. I had a ton of unanswered questions, wondering why a manufacturer would do certain things that seemed illogical and how I could make them better.

Then I have moved onto car magazines, all issues of which I still have dating back to early 1990s. This was different, it was the “other side of the story” or so I thought. It took me quite sometime to realize that half of what I was reading came from the manufacturer and the other was an opinion of some “expert” with a degree in journalism. Sadly, it took my engineering degree, several years of working as a mechanic’s assistant, two years as an automotive test engineer, and some reading between-the-lines reading to realize that most of what is out there IS in fact an advertisement. … Continue Reading

2011 NYIAS – Janis Joplin, Face-Lifted and MPG-ified

Since I Worked hard all my lifetime, the focus of the show was rightfully on fuel economy – “Eco” and “MPGs” [sic] were the catch phrases and 40 was the magic number. The result of this is a bunch of existing cars offered with more efficient engines. Other than that, it was a bunch of face-lifts, special editions (OMG Chrysler, rly?), and some existing models redone just for the sake of being redone.

I’m counting on you, Lord, please don’t let me down. Going there I was not looking for anything specific, to me this was a vacation day, a day that I get to do something I am passionate about and I was not about to cloud it with schedules and meetings. I carved my own path, got to see some nice cars and meet some great people.

Some weeks are really long and by Friday you can’t help but think of taking a road trip. This week was like that, therefore before 9pm on Friday I had booked a hotel for the Canadian Grand Prix in Montreal. Let’s hope that warmer months bring us many more road trips.

I found this image some time ago in the tubes of the web. Credit on it goes to this site, and it seems appropriate.

Group B Monsters – Sounds of Power

April 14, 2011 Opinion 3 Comments

We all have a habit, as racing fans, to look upon racing series like Group B as iconic. We look at them as the last of their breed, when men were men, cars were cars, and such.  We have placed these racing series on a pedestal that no sane person will ever achieve again, and although the drivers we have deified are human we treat them as gods amongst us. We look past the carnage and lives lost during these four brief years in hopes that it might happen again, knowing full well the days of the blood sport are long gone.

Having a project car means having a to-do list. Having a project car which is also a racecar means having a to-do list with a deadline. If your project is not completed well in advance of the race, you’re not racing, it’s that simple. Redfive Turbo E34 is no exception and with the start of One Lap of America at the end of the month, that deadline and that to-do list are butting heads.

When we think of the Jeep brand, the first thing that comes to mind is the iconic Wrangler. Think a little more and the image of the boxy Cherokee appears. When the first models rolled off the Toledo Assembly Plant in 1984 no one expected the little Cherokee to set a trend for small SUVs which are so popular now days. Today we will look at two Cherokees, an early ’86 model and one of the last “Classic” models from 2001.

Weekend Video – Dancin’ Feet

I’ve tried, but I couldn’t master the black magic that is heel-and-toe. In the end, I am not a competitive person and I enjoy an empty track the most – just me and the car. Losing a second off my lap or the deep satisfaction that comes with executing this trick perfectly is irrelevant to me so as long as I am having a good time. … Continue Reading

Group B Monsters – The Days of Madness

April 7, 2011 Motorsport 1 Comment

For years I have been searching for that one video that best showcased the amazing Group B Rally of the 1980s and I have finally found it. It was not one car or one driver that made the Group B so amazing, it was the insanely powerful cars, the amazing drivers, and fearless fans put together that made this the greatest spectacle in motorsport. If you are old enough to remember these races, this video should bring a  tear to your eye. … Continue Reading
