2011 Grand Prix of Canada: thirty-four passes, six safety car deployments, two lead changes, two-hour suspension, longest F1 race ever, won by a man who had two accidents, a penalty, six pit-stops, and managed to come from last place to take the lead in the final lap. I had room in downtown Montreal Hilton, fantastic Grand Stand 32 seat and… I missed it all.

Months in planning, this was supposed to be a fun three-day weekend with my wife and daughter. They were going to wonder around the city while I was at the track for the practice, qualifying, and the race. We were going to spend the mornings and evenings together, and all that pretty much happened but it almost did not. … Continue Reading

Modern Classic: Merkur XR4Ti

5711 320x240 merkur xr4ti front red 1989 Modern Classic: Merkur XR4Ti

In the United States, we look at foreign auto markets and lust a some of the offerings such as Ford Focus RS, Audi RS5, Holden Ute to name a few. We wonder why these vehicles have not made their way onto US soil. Companies have tried bringing vehicles from other markets with varying results. One of the biggest flops was Ford’s Merkur, a brand which brought the very successful Ford Sierra and Scorpio.

In the 1980s Ford was talking about selling vehicles from Europe. The vehicle they were looking at was the brand new Ford Sierra. However, then vice president, Bob Lutz, wanted to differentiate the Sierra from other Ford vehicles in the lineup. It was therefore decided that a new brand would be created for the new vehicles, Merkur.

Twenty minutes, that is how long it took me to find a parking spot at the Greenwich Concours. Driving around the lot I couldn’t help but notice that the parking lot is a car show of its own, but unlike any I have seen before. The cars were as random as one could imagine, which is something that cannot be seen at any “cruise night” or motorsport event. Checkout the second Greenwich Concours gallery, with the cars of the parking lot.

One of the greatest Concours events on the east coast, the Greenwich Concours d ‘ Elegance, is split into two days: a domestic day on Saturday and European day on Sunday. I only made it to the show on Sunday since it is some distance from my home and because I find the obscure European cars more interesting. Check out the gallery below where I have attempted to capture the most interesting cars.

2011 Acura TSX Sport Wagon: What it is and what it could be

May 26, 2011 Long Reviews 11 Comments
5478 350x300 2011 acura tsx sport wagon 7 2011 Acura TSX Sport Wagon: What it is and what it could be

Car reviews, much like annual performance reviews, can be tricky to write. Love the car and you’ll be labeled a fan-boy. Hate the car and you’ll be labeled, well, a hater. Most writers find a few things they love, few things they hate, throw all into the mix and bam, a review. A writer whom I respect calls it “The Wobble” and chances are that at some point we all have all been guilty of doing it.

It’s easy to be a critic, but it’s tougher to be a constructive critic. I just spent a weekend with the Acura TSX Sport Wagon, and as a critic I’m tempted to write simply that I liked it – but I couldn’t love it. As a constructive critic, however, I’ve decided to offer a solution that would change my opinion, and perhaps the opinion of others as well, from “like” to “love”.

The idea stemmed from looking the TSX over and just realizing that it could look so much better with so little effort. Don’t get me wrong. This is a great car. It drives smoothly. It corners well. The engine and transmission combination is more than adequate. The interior is nice, and if it is not opulent it is at least high quality. The seats are very comfortable, and there is plenty of storage room. Frankly, there isn’t much wrong with the TSX wagon. Still, I couldn’t help imagine how much better it could look with some simple changes.

The early to mid-nineties were the golden age for Japanese sport cars. Seemly every year a new sports car from the Land of the Rising Sun would arrive onto the shores; Supra, Eclipse, Celica, 300ZX, and RX-7 to name a few. While those cars did not have the sound and torque of domestic V8s, people them loved as they were affordable, well built, and simply fun to drive. One of those vehicles was the Nissan 240SX.
