Behind the scenes at Rolex 24 at Daytona

Turner Motorsport

The 48th running of the Rolex 24 at Daytona is now behind us. With heavy rains, record setting 53 lead changes and a margin of victory of less than a minute, this year’s 24 was a spectacular race to watch. The coverage by SpeedTV was decent, but of course at night they had to throw in a re-run of some old NASCAR race that no one could care less about. Fortunately my friends from VelozMedia were in Daytona along with Turner Motorsport Team producing a behind-the-scenes documentary of Turner’s journey through the race.

VelozMedia’s staff photographer, Tim Hourihan, has been kind enough to share some of the images he has gathered for the documentary. Since we have all seen races, be it on TV or live, I have selected over a hundred pictures from Tim’s gallery that give us the best perspective of how it is to be on the crew of a three-car race team at Daytona. At the end of the day one questions remains: which did they consume more of, gasoline or coffee?

The gallery can be view two ways, picture-by-picture by clicking the [View with PicLens] button (recommended), or by clicking thumbnails slightly lower. Enjoy. All photo credits go to Tim Hourihan and VelozMedia. Please don’t use the pictures without permission.

Project ET-001: BMW M62 4.4L V8 Engine

I still remember the day I saw the first one. It was a nice early spring day in 1997 and I was in walking around near Battery Park in downtown Manhattan. There in the corner of my eye I saw it; jet black, on its three-piece wheels which came only on the models with six-speed [...]

Driving Jaguar’s new XFR, on the Road and on the Track

I have recently had the opportunity to drive the new Jaguar XFR on the road and on a race track. With the XFR competing directly against the BMW M5, which I have also had the opportunity to drive on the track and on the street, it only made sense to evaluate the XFR while using [...]

Cars of Paris

French cars; some say they’re ugly, some say they’re beautiful, all agree that they’re unreliable. However, there is something about them that makes you want to look. These pictures were taken in March of 2007, my wife’s and mine last trip before the birth of our daughter. Selected for your viewing pleasure are not only [...]
