The End. And a New Beginning.

I started this website almost three years ago. Over that time, to my surprise, the site has grown quite a lot. So much in fact, that it simply takes up too much of my time. The time has come to make a drastic change.

It happened during a casual conversation with Tim Odell, one of the founders of Hooniverse.com. Both of us were complaining about how difficult it is to run a website while managing the less important things in life, such as a day job and a family. In the end we agreed that it would be a great idea to combine the two sites. As of Monday, CarGuyDad.com will become part of Hooniverse.com, and I will be the Managing Editor there (mom will be so proud!).

All the typical stuff such as car reviews, news, motorsports, and other interesting stuff will carry over to Hooniverse.com. We will also revisit some articles from this site’s past and introduce a ton of new content.  The overall awesomeness that is Hooniverse will not change. I am really excited about this and motivated to create something really cool. Please follow me and the rest of the CarGuyDad.com contributors over to Hooniverse.com.

Thanks,

Atypical Spyshots – Lexus LFA LeMans racer

Generally, I find so-called “spy shots” just plain dumb, but these are not your typical spy shots. What you see here is Lexus’ prototype (I think) racecar for next year’s LeMans (supposedly). Well, it looks cool. Probably has a V10 engine derived from the road car, is probably lighter, and… well, I don’t know, it’s a race car, so it has racecar suspension, racecar brakes, no interior, and various safety equipment. Not surprisingly, it looks a lot like their 24 Hours of Nuerburgring racer.

Go Lexus go, Mazda could use some company.

What is your, ahem, ultimate automotive vacation?

How about ordering a new BMW M3 to your specifications, picking it up in Germany, driving around Germany, Austria, Hungary, Switzerland, and Lichtenstein, with a stop at the little-known automotive Mecca that is the Nürburgring? Oh, and driving the Nordschleife. Over and over again. In the M3 and a Porsche Boxster S. Does that sound like a nice automotive vacation?

Ja, das ist gut.  … Continue Reading

Poem: When I Look at the Old Car

And now for some automotive poetry, which tries to explain the un-explainable, how new cars become old.

by Marcia F. Brown

When I look at the old car
backed into the cleared-out space in the shed,
I can almost understand
those bewildered men who leave
their softening wives in middle age, up-
and-walk-out after decades
of marriage and family, to take up
with some buffed and waxed young thing
with great lines, horsepower
to burn and a dazzling array
of untested equipment. … Continue Reading

Unfortunately, the exact details of the story behind the sad demise of this car are unknown. The pictures came to me with the below story which may or may not be right. I checked snoops.com and they had nothing on it. Regardless of the circumstance, it is sad to see a nice car go up in smoke.

24 Hours of LeMons – The Parking Lot

While wondering aimlessly around the New Hampshire Motor Speedway during the recent 24 Hours of LeMons race, I noticed that there were other interesting cars besides the crappy racers. The parking areas of the infield were filled with with cars, trucks, and other vehicles which would make enthusiast drool when spotted by their lonesome and not over-shadowed by the race. Check them out, there is something for everyone.

Before getting the turbocharged E34 535i to the start of One Lap in Indiana, Justin Kababik and Baer Connard wanted to make sure that everything was working properly and the car was race-ready. Needless to say, things were not perfect. Here is a day-by-day rundown of the week prior to the start of the race.

Monday, April 18th

Shake down test at Lime Rock Park. Not since 2001 has RedFive made it back from the track under its own power, so these were trying times. RedFive performed very well however. Sure, there were minor issues such as vacuum hoses popping off, or brakes which didn’t work too good, or the occasional disappearance of coolant (more on both of these later). The great news was that handling was sharp and neutral, and despite not getting all 17psi of boost every time the throttle was applied, the acceleration was great. … Continue Reading

Some weeks are really long and by Friday you can’t help but think of taking a road trip. This week was like that, therefore before 9pm on Friday I had booked a hotel for the Canadian Grand Prix in Montreal. Let’s hope that warmer months bring us many more road trips.

I found this image some time ago in the tubes of the web. Credit on it goes to this site, and it seems appropriate.

Final Preparations for One Lap of America 2011

Having a project car means having a to-do list. Having a project car which is also a racecar means having a to-do list with a deadline. If your project is not completed well in advance of the race, you’re not racing, it’s that simple. Redfive Turbo E34 is no exception and with the start of One Lap of America at the end of the month, that deadline and that to-do list are butting heads.

El Diablo – The Most Powerful M5

Before a new model of a car is available for sale, chances are that an internet forum for the said model already exists. Potential future owners discuss options, colors, features, rumors and their plans for the car. Once the cars are available for sale, prices are discussed, followed by questions regarding which engine mods make the most power and which rims look best.

Then there is that one guy, the guy who has been on the forum from the get go, the guy with 20 posts per day. He is that guy, the guy who goes all out and builds a car of epic proportions. No expense is spared on his car, it gets only the best of stuff and is taken to only the best of tuners. The car becomes an instant legend, gains a cult following, and in the process shuts up all the haters. That car was El Diablo, and it was the most powerful M5 ever made.

“We’re all amazed by Ken Block’s latest Gymkhana video, but there is an undercurrent of those that feel the real drifting scene started underground and that is where the real stars are. This video by Format67 is a return to the “running from the cops” days for most of us, when we would find an empty parking lot, have our fun and quickly dart away before getting in trouble.”
